This school just got crazier every second. He shook his head at the thoughts of the people he had already run into. Ashton was beginning to wonder if there were any normal people at this place. His mouth curved in a slight smile as he regarded the peaceful scene in front of him. Despite the events of the past several weeks, at this current moment, he was feeling pretty good. Life was never perfect, but there were always glimpses of perfection. The garden was definitely high up on his list of places. The plush grass under his feet was surprisingly green for the current time of year but he couldn't have been more thrilled by the fact.
Glancing around, he sighed. Serene. He was engulfed in a temporary paradise and he was determined to enjoy every second of it. For once, he was glad that there didn't seem to be anyone around. At least, he was glad that the place wasn't flooded with people. Ashton, being sociable, definitely wouldn't have minded some company. He took a seat on a nearby bench, so that he could stretch out and just revel in the calming silence.
With his eyes shut, memories flickered by in a rapid fire storm. He cringed away from the stabbing pain in his head as the screams of his aunt echoed over and over again. With his powers came the inherent ability to recall any memory to absolute perfection. In this case, it created the perfect nightmare. Life, he thought bitterly, had a funny way of taking away the scarce moments of bliss.
Unclenching his fists, he fought to relax himself, to control his power. He felt it grow steadier inside of him, like a chain that was starting to link itself back together again. He let it stream away slightly, diluting the memories that brought him such pain. A momentary fix. His power could never work on him permanently. In a few hours those hated memories would push back to the forefront of his mind, but for now, they were sated and pushed back by the force of his ability.
He smiled once again, his eyes lighting up as the pressure eased off of him. His lean body relaxed completely as he listened to the merry chirping of the birds that flitted to and from the trees that surrounded him. Their life was so simple and sometimes, he wished his could be just the same.
